Volatility Explained

Editor: Updated

Pokie volatility describes how game awards vary, rather than how much a game is expected to return on average. It helps explain why two titles can share an RTP yet have very different prize patterns. This guide separates volatility, hit frequency, RTP and maximum win, using hypothetical examples rather than promises about a session. Start with the guide hub, or compare the separate high-volatility and low-volatility game categories.

What volatility means for a pokie’s awards

Think of volatility as the spread of possible awards around an average. A model concentrating awards near its average differs from one placing more weight on very small and very large outcomes. The average alone does not reveal that spread.

Volatility: the variation

How widely outcomes differ within the game’s mathematical model. A descriptive rating needs the relevant supplier’s definition and game context.

RTP: the average

Theoretical return relative to stakes. Two models can have the same expected return while distributing their prizes very differently.

Hit frequency: the count

How often a defined award occurs. Receiving something, recovering the stake and making a net gain are three different tests.

The UK Gambling Commission’s technical definitions describe standard deviation as a common way to represent volatility. A published low, medium or high label is a simpler description; it is not itself a complete probability table.

Our how pokies work guide explains outcomes and paytables, while how to play covers controls and balance records. Those foundations help when interpreting an award. They do not let a player predict the next random result.

Read low, medium and high as descriptions

Low volatility is commonly used to describe a comparatively narrower spread, often associated with smaller, more frequent awards. High volatility describes a wider spread, often involving rarer substantial awards. Medium sits between the categories under the supplier’s system. These are broad descriptions rather than rules about every individual prize.

BetMGM’s explanation uses those three broad bands to discuss frequency and prize size. A category does not tell you the exact chance of an ordinary hit, a feature trigger or finishing ahead. It also does not establish that two suppliers use identical thresholds.

If one source uses five symbols and another uses a ten-point scale, do not convert between them without matching definitions. A score of four on one display is not automatically less volatile than six on another. Likewise, medium-high should not be silently rewritten as low just because it suits a comparison.

Keep the rating attached to the full title, edition and relevant mode. The provider directory gives supplier context, and the game-format hub distinguishes mechanics. Neither a famous supplier nor familiar artwork supplies missing numerical probabilities.

Volatility and RTP answer different questions

RTP concerns expected awards relative to stakes; volatility concerns their variation. A high-RTP label does not establish low volatility, and a low-volatility label does not establish a higher return. They describe different aspects of a model and need separate evidence.

For a hypothetical 96% RTP, the expected award is 0.96 units per unit staked. The corresponding expected net result is minus 0.04 units. That average could arise from many different distributions. The examples in the next section show two, without claiming either represents a commercial game.

Read the RTP guide for theoretical versus recorded return and the casino’s choice of available RTP configurations. An operator selecting a supplier’s available RTP version is a different issue from a player selecting a described volatility mode. Do not assume either choice exists in every game.

The high RTP comparison is therefore separate from volatility categories. A mathematical advantage in a stated percentage does not remove uncertainty about a short session, and a smoother-looking prize pattern does not turn a negative expected return into a positive one.

Two invented games with the same average return

Consider Model A, costing one unit per round. It awards zero units with probability 20%, one unit with probability 64%, and two units with probability 16%. Its expected award is 0 × 0.20 + 1 × 0.64 + 2 × 0.16 = 0.96 units. An award of one unit simply returns the stake.

Model B also costs one unit. It awards zero with probability 88% and eight units with probability 12%. Its expected award is 0 × 0.88 + 8 × 0.12 = 0.96 units. The same 96% theoretical RTP now comes from a much wider spread of awards.

Model A has an 80% chance of returning something, but only a 16% chance of returning more than the one-unit stake. Model B returns something on 12% of rounds, and those paying rounds exceed the stake. This distinction shows why the word win needs a definition.

Neither model schedules its outcomes into tidy blocks of 100 rounds. The probabilities describe each round under the stated independent model. They are not a guarantee that a particular block will contain exactly 20 or 88 zero-award outcomes, and they are not estimates for a named casino or game.

Variance and standard deviation explain the spread

Variance measures the average squared distance of outcomes from their mean. Standard deviation is its square root, placing the spread back in the same units as the award. You do not need these formulas to read a game, but they explain why identical RTPs can conceal different distributions.

For our imaginary Model A, the average squared award is 1.28. Subtracting the squared mean, 0.96 × 0.96, gives variance of 0.3584 and standard deviation of about 0.599 units. Model B’s average squared award is 7.68, giving variance of 6.7584 and standard deviation of about 2.600 units.

Subtracting the fixed one-unit stake from every outcome changes the mean net result, but not either model’s variance. These figures compare the two complete teaching distributions. They are not supplier rating cutoffs, a suggested stake size or a range guaranteed to contain a session result.

The UKGC’s monitoring explanation considers volatility and sample volume when assessing recorded RTP against a designed return. It does not supply a universal number of spins that lets a reader certify any game. A simple category label cannot replace the complete model needed for that analysis.

An award can still leave the balance lower

A hit can mean an award of any size, depending on the definition used. If an imaginary A$0.50 round returns A$0.20, an award occurred but the net result is a loss of A$0.30. Returning A$0.50 breaks even before any other applicable charge. Returning A$1 produces a net gain of A$0.50.

Imagine a separate ten-round record at A$1 per round. Eight rounds return A$0.50 each and two return nothing. That record contains eight paying rounds, A$10 of total stakes and A$4 of awards, leaving a net loss of A$6. Its 80% observed hit frequency did not produce a profitable session.

This invented record is not a theoretical distribution or a volatility measurement. It illustrates the bookkeeping difference between a payment and profit. A screen animation, colour change or celebratory sound cannot resolve that difference; the stake and award figures can.

The glossary explains related labels. When reading a claimed hit rate, ask whether it includes sub-stake awards, stake returns, feature entries or only rounds ending in a net gain. Without that definition, an apparently precise percentage can be hard to compare.

Volatility does not give a timetable for a win

A higher-volatility description does not say how many losing rounds come before a large award. A lower-volatility description does not impose a maximum losing run. A sequence can look unusual without creating an obligation for the game to repair an individual’s balance.

Within the independent teaching models, the probabilities remain those stated after a losing sequence. Watching another person’s results, switching devices or changing the time of day does not alter that mathematical assumption. A perceived pattern in a short record is not a demonstrated control over the next outcome.

A game with a stated collection or feature state needs that specific rule considered separately. A visible meter might describe progress under the rules, but it should not be treated as a general repayment meter for previous losses. Read what resets it and what it actually qualifies for.

The UKGC’s random-outcome standard prohibits adaptive compensation within its scope while allowing properly described features with different rules. That is a scoped regulatory reference, not our certification of an overseas casino or a claim that every game has identical state behaviour.

A large feature award is only part of the distribution

A feature can add multipliers, retriggers, sticky symbols or several stages of awards. Its importance to volatility depends on the probabilities and values within the complete model, not simply on the feature’s name. A visually dramatic screen can still produce a modest net result.

For example, Pragmatic Play’s Sweet Bonanza description explains tumbling wins and multipliers during its free-spin feature. Those mechanics help describe the game. That product description alone does not provide every probability needed to calculate its variance, and we do not assign a new numerical volatility score from it.

Similarly, Megaways describes a way of arranging eligible symbol positions, while Hold and Win describes a feature structure. Neither label guarantees a particular rating across all titles. Check the full game’s published information.

A bonus buy adds another comparison issue because its commitment can differ sharply from a normal round. An imaginary 80-times feature at A$0.50 costs A$40. If it awards A$12, the net result is minus A$28. Reaching the feature did not guarantee recovery of its price.

Maximum win and jackpot size are separate facts

A maximum win says what an award may reach under the applicable rules. It does not tell you how often that outcome occurs or how the remaining prizes are distributed. Two games with the same top multiplier can therefore have different variability.

For a hypothetical 5,000-times maximum applied to an A$0.20 stake, the multiplication gives A$1,000. It says nothing about the probability of that award. Do not turn the calculated amount into an expected result or imply that enough rounds guarantee it.

The UKGC’s progressive-jackpot monitoring guidance separates base-game performance from jackpot performance because infrequent large jackpots complicate measurement. A base-game rating should not automatically be applied to a separate optional jackpot stake without reading its definition.

A jackpot ceiling, a game’s maximum award and a casino’s withdrawal limit also differ. The progressive jackpot guide covers eligibility and caps, while withdrawal limits explains account restrictions. A growing jackpot display is not a volatility clock or proof that a prize is due.

Stake size changes cash exposure, not the meaning of a label

When probabilities and multiplier rules remain unchanged, multiplying the stake scales the monetary outcomes. An imaginary ten-times award is A$2 with an A$0.20 stake and A$10 with an A$1 stake. The multiplier is the same, while the cash amount differs.

For those unchanged proportional rules, multiplying the stake by five multiplies the standard deviation in money by five and the variance in money by 25. That is a mathematical scaling statement, not evidence that every game’s modes, jackpot eligibility or prize rules remain unchanged at every stake.

A fixed A$20 could cover 100 A$0.20 rounds or 20 A$1 rounds only under an explicit assumption of no returns, extra charges or other entries. Actual session length cannot be read from that division alone. Awards reused as stakes change turnover, and additional feature costs change the arithmetic.

The low deposit guide concerns account funding rather than mathematical volatility. The high roller category likewise does not define a game’s variance. Spending and time limits should remain boundaries, rather than amounts to increase to wait for a feature or recover losses.

Some games offer selectable volatility modes

A published catalogue rating can describe a title while the game also offers particular mode choices. Keep the title’s overall description and the selected option separate. Do not assume that changing a mode is available everywhere or that it leaves every other condition unchanged.

Wazdan’s Moon of Fortune page illustrates the distinction: its Game Info labels volatility High, while the detailed description presents Volatility Levels with low, standard and high choices. This is a provider-specific example, not evidence of availability at the casinos below.

That same page separately describes Chance Level options which multiply the bet and alter the likelihood of entering its feature. A volatility choice and a feature-chance purchase should not be treated as the same control. Read the complete price, reward basis and mode description rather than interpreting an appealing label alone.

The Relax Gaming, Pragmatic Play and wider software pages offer supplier context. A brand name does not establish which controls are enabled in a particular integration. Our controls guide explains how to identify the mode and total stake shown.

A demonstration can teach controls, not establish a rating

A short demonstration can show where the help panel sits and how an award is presented. It cannot reveal the complete distribution just because several features appeared or a balance fell quickly. The free pokies guide distinguishes demonstration credits from promotional funds.

For a useful observation record, note the game, version, mode, stake and exact question you are investigating. If the question is how the interface explains a multiplier, a screenshot may answer it. If it is the probability of a rare award, an isolated screenshot will not provide the necessary data.

A highlight video has an additional limitation: it may show selected outcomes rather than a complete sample. One unusually large award cannot prove high volatility, and a string of small awards cannot prove low volatility. A maximum-win clip also supplies no denominator for estimating its frequency.

A phone and desktop may arrange information differently without changing a stated mathematical model. Read the mobile hub and browser versus app comparison for layout and access. Smoother animations or faster loading do not verify a game’s variance, licence or payment service.

A volatility rating does not calculate bonus value

An account bonus can impose game exclusions, contribution rates, a maximum stake, expiry and cashout rules. A low-volatility label does not say a game counts, and a high-volatility label does not make a promotion profitable. Those restrictions belong to the account offer.

Suppose an imaginary A$20 bonus has 30-times bonus-only wagering. Its qualifying turnover target is A$600. At a 50% contribution rate, A$1 of eligible stakes records A$0.50 of progress; A$1,200 of such stakes would be needed for the simplified A$600 target. This says nothing about whether the balance survives or the other conditions are satisfied.

Knowing only the RTP and a broad volatility band cannot supply a precise probability of completing that offer. The full award distribution, permitted stakes, contribution rules and stopping conditions would matter. Do not publish an exact success percentage from two labels and a wagering multiplier.

Read bonus terms, low wagering bonuses and the wagering calculator for the relevant definitions. The bonus hub separates offer categories, while the welcome guide covers the packages displayed below.

Record the evidence behind a volatility claim

A useful comparison includes the full game title, supplier, edition, rating wording, selected mode, source and date checked. Keep RTP, hit frequency and maximum award in separate fields if they are supplied. Leave an item unknown when the source does not establish it.

Use the actual game’s help and the supplier’s description for their respective claims. The UKGC’s game-information standard is a reference for accessible rules and winning-likelihood information in its scope; it does not make every third-party rating an independently verified measurement.

Also separate game mathematics from account service. A volatility rating does not prove quick withdrawals or confirm identity requirements. The withdrawal guide, account verification page and casino directory cover those different questions.

For Australian readers, ACMA’s official guidance explains restrictions on online casino-style services supplied to Australia. A supplier rating or overseas licence does not establish Australian authorisation. If gambling becomes difficult to control, the support page provides a route to help; understanding volatility does not require paid participation.

Welcome packages and game ratings need separate checks

These four welcome packages allow comparison of advertised offer structures. They do not establish which game modes, volatility ratings or RTP configurations a casino currently provides. They are not reports of personally tested paid rounds, feature purchases or withdrawals.

Volatility FAQs

What does volatility mean in pokies?

Volatility describes variation in game awards around their average. A broader spread differs from a model concentrating more outcomes near its mean. Low, medium and high are descriptive bands, not complete probability tables. Read the supplier's definition, exact title and relevant mode rather than treating the label as a prediction of the next round.

Is low volatility the same as high RTP?

No. RTP concerns the average expected award relative to stakes, while volatility concerns how awards vary. Two games can have the same RTP and different prize distributions. A lower-volatility label does not establish a higher return percentage, and neither label guarantees that a particular balance or session will be profitable.

Does high volatility guarantee a large win eventually?

No. A high-volatility description does not specify a number of rounds before a large award or promise that an individual will receive one. A losing sequence is not a repayment schedule. Any collection meter or state-dependent feature must be interpreted under its actual rules rather than as a general promise to recover losses.

Is hit frequency the chance of making a profit?

Not necessarily. A hit can be defined as any award, including one below the stake or one that only returns it. In an imaginary A$0.50 round returning A$0.20, the net result is a loss of A$0.30. Check the definition before comparing hit rates or treating a paying round as a net win.

What is the difference between variance and standard deviation?

Variance measures the average squared distance of outcomes from their mean. Standard deviation is the square root of variance and expresses spread in the original units. They can describe a complete mathematical distribution, but a category such as high does not supply enough information to calculate either one or a precise session-outcome probability.

Does a bigger maximum win prove higher volatility?

No. A maximum identifies an upper award under the rules, but not its probability or the distribution of all other prizes. Two models could share a top award while having different variability. A jackpot ceiling, game maximum and account withdrawal limit are also separate restrictions and should not be treated as one figure.

Does changing the stake change the volatility rating?

Under unchanged proportional probabilities and prize rules, a larger stake scales monetary outcomes rather than redefining the multiplier distribution. Monetary standard deviation scales with the stake, while monetary variance scales with its square. Actual games may have separate modes, eligibility or costs, so read the rules before assuming every stake uses identical conditions.

Can players select a volatility mode?

Some games describe selectable modes. For example, Wazdan's Moon of Fortune page has a High catalogue label while its detailed description offers low, standard and high Volatility Levels. That provider example does not prove availability at a listed casino. Read the chosen mode and full cost separately from any feature-chance or purchase option.

Can a short demo session reveal a game's true volatility?

A short demo can help explain controls and how awards are displayed, but it does not establish the full prize distribution. Selected clips, a single large award or several quiet rounds are insufficient to calculate the model's variance. Record the title, mode and source, and distinguish a personal observation from a verified game rating.

Is a low-volatility game guaranteed to clear bonus wagering?

No. A rating does not establish promotion eligibility, contribution, expiry, maximum stake or cashout conditions. It also cannot guarantee that the balance survives the required turnover. A precise completion probability would need far more information about the game distribution and offer rules. Read the account promotion separately from the game's mathematics.
