Hold and Win

Editor: Updated

Hold and Win games commonly feature prize symbols that remain on a grid while further respins take place. New qualifying symbols can reset a counter, add values or activate other effects. The exact trigger, counter and payout rules vary by title, so this guide explains what to check, how to follow a feature total and why a nearly full grid does not guarantee the largest award.

What does Hold and Win mean?

The label describes a family of slot features built around retaining certain symbols while further attempts take place. Hold and Spin, money respins and related names can describe similar-looking sequences, but they do not establish one universal rule set. Read the individual game’s explanation rather than relying on the category name.

A common presentation changes from ordinary reels to a feature grid containing valued symbols and empty positions. Qualifying symbols can remain while other positions produce new outcomes. The game may sum values at the end, award them during the sequence or apply additional collection rules.

Holding usually describes software retaining a symbol under the feature rules. It should not be assumed to mean the player manually selects which symbols to keep. Buttons that advance an animation also do not, by themselves, establish that timing or placement changes the outcome.

The base game can still use paylines, ways or other structures. A Hold and Win feature is separate from that ordinary win evaluation. Our Games hub, video-pokies guide and classic-pokies guide explain the broader formats in which features can appear.

Follow the feature from trigger to settled award

Start with the trigger. Check the required symbol type, count and positions, including whether a feature can also trigger through another event. Three money symbols anywhere and three money symbols on a specified reel are different conditions, even if the feature screens look similar.

Then identify what carries into the feature. The starting symbols may retain their displayed values, while another title can generate a separate starting grid. Check whether the stake is fixed at the triggering round’s setting and how any displayed values relate to that amount.

A useful reading order is:

  1. Entry: identify the qualifying event and any alternative entry mode.
  2. Starting state: note the retained symbols, active grid and initial respins.
  3. Continuation: read which events reset the counter, modify values or open more positions.
  4. Settlement: check the stopping conditions and how the final award is calculated.

This sequence is a way to read the rules, not a promise of a particular result. A feature can end without filling the screen, and its total can be below a purchase price where entry was bought. The settled result is more useful than the largest value seen during an animation.

A counter reset is different from adding respins

Many examples begin with a limited counter and reset it when a qualifying new symbol arrives. However, the initial number, reset amount and relevant symbol types are title-specific. A separate feature can use additional attempts, several counters or a changing grid.

For a hypothetical feature that starts at three and resets to three, an empty attempt can reduce the display to two. A qualifying symbol on the following attempt then restores it to three. That is not the same as adding three to the remaining two and displaying five.

If no further qualifying events occur, a three-attempt counter can count down through two, one and zero. If new events keep resetting it, the total number of attempts taken across the feature can exceed three. An initial counter therefore does not necessarily describe the feature’s final length.

Also check whether every new symbol resets the count. A valued coin, collector, jackpot symbol or blank may have different effects. A decorative change to an already held symbol is not automatically a new qualifying landing.

A nearly complete grid does not establish that the last position is due to fill. Read any explicit rule changing probabilities or feature state, but do not infer an unstated guarantee from a highlighted empty cell or a repeated countdown.

Read coin values, stake multiples and the final total

A number printed on a symbol can represent a currency amount, credits or a multiple of a defined stake. Identify that unit before adding values. A symbol labelled 5× is different from one displaying $5, and a credit value needs its denomination before it can be converted into currency.

For a simplified feature paying each held value once at settlement, hypothetical symbols worth 2×, 3× and 5× total ten times the defined stake. At a twenty-cent total stake, that would return $2. This calculation only applies where those symbols share that unit and the rules award them once.

Other features can collect values repeatedly, apply modifiers or clear positions after an award. In those cases, summing the final visible symbols alone may miss earlier collections. Conversely, adding a cumulative total to the symbols already included in it can count the same value twice.

Keep the base-game result, feature award and combined round total separate. A final panel may already include the initial line win. Use the completed-round record to identify the settled amount rather than adding every number shown during the sequence.

A paying feature is not automatically a profitable purchase. If a hypothetical $12 feature purchase returns $4, the net result is an $8 loss. Check the full entry cost and final credited return, rather than treating the number of retained symbols as a measure of profit.

Provider examples showing why the details matter

Joker’s Jewels Hold & Spin

Pragmatic Play’s game page describes three or more money symbols triggering three respins. Money symbols stay in place, new ones reset the counter, and prizes are awarded at the feature’s end. This illustrates a held-symbol settlement model.

Floating Dragon Hold and Spin

Pragmatic Play’s original Floating Dragon page specifies three money symbols on the middle reel for entry. It describes visible values being awarded when a new money symbol lands, alongside a counter reset. This requires different accounting from simply summing symbols once at the end.

3 Carts of Gold: Hold and Win

Playson’s release description identifies Boost, Mystery and Collect cart features associated with coloured gems. It also describes an additional Rainbow Gem effect. Extra modifiers can therefore change how a Hold and Win round operates.

These examples explain mechanics from provider descriptions. They are not a claim that we personally funded accounts or tested cash payouts, and they do not confirm that the listed casinos carry all three titles. Check the actual lobby for the provider and complete release name.

Keep sequels and special editions separate. A new version can change the trigger, initial respins, grid, collection method or prize limits while retaining familiar artwork. A search result, screenshot or video of another edition should not replace the loaded game’s paytable.

Collectors, multipliers and expanding grids

A collector can gather values from other symbols under a specified rule. Check which symbols qualify, whether the gathered amount is immediately credited or stored, and whether the original values remain available for later collections. The same collector artwork can accompany different mechanics in another title.

A multiplier can apply to one coin, a marked position, a collection or the whole feature. The location of the multiplier matters as much as its number. A 2× effect on one hypothetical $1 symbol adds $1 to that symbol’s value; doubling an entire $6 subtotal would instead produce $12.

Read how multiple modifiers combine. They may add, multiply, replace an earlier value or apply only to later arrivals. Do not assume a new 3× marker multiplies every existing amount just because it appears above the grid.

An expanding feature can create more positions, but that changes the layout rather than guaranteeing a full screen. Check whether new rows have their own counters, whether existing symbols move and which grid must be filled for a particular prize.

Visual pots and meters also need an explicit rule. Some record actual retained state; others present an effect without promising that the next symbol completes anything. Only attribute a guaranteed activation or improved probability where the loaded rules state it.

A Grand label does not necessarily mean a progressive pool

Hold and Win games can label prizes Mini, Minor, Major or Grand. Those names do not establish whether the values are fixed stake multiples, changing game prizes or progressive pools. Read the funding and award conditions for each tier.

Playson’s 3 Carts of Gold description, for example, identifies an in-game Grand prize of 5,000 times the stake for filling its fifteen cells. That describes a specific title’s condition. It should not be transferred to another grid, another Grand label or every Hold and Win game.

For a generic fixed 1,000× prize, a hypothetical twenty-cent stake would correspond to $200. A network progressive displayed in currency follows different rules for qualification, growth and reset. Our progressive-jackpots guide explains those separate systems.

Check whether a full-screen award replaces the sum of coin values, adds to it or is subject to a total game cap. Do not combine a large headline prize with every visible value unless the paytable explicitly permits that calculation.

A nearly filled board is not a guaranteed jackpot, and a top prize is a possible ceiling under conditions rather than an expected feature result. The amount shown on the Grand label is also separate from account withdrawal limits and payment arrangements.

Hold and Win, free spins and ordinary respins

A free-spin feature usually grants a stated number of turns under its own rules. A hold-style feature can instead use a counter that resets on qualifying events. A game may include both, so identify which mode is active and what ends it.

Some titles allow one feature to occur during another. Check whether the first mode pauses, whether its stake and modifiers carry through and where play resumes. The presence of a free-spin counter does not establish that a separate hold feature uses the same multiplier.

A single ordinary respin holding one reel is another possible mechanic. It does not automatically follow a full money-grid system. Our classic-pokies guide includes examples of reel respins, while the Megaways guide explains changing layouts and other feature combinations.

Casino promotional free spins are separate again. They are account allocations that can have eligible games, expiry and winnings conditions. The free-spin promotion guide explains those terms. The same word on a game screen and an offer banner does not mean the same product.

RTP and volatility cannot be read from the respin counter

RTP is a theoretical long-run return measure. It does not promise a refund on a particular balance, paid round or feature purchase. BetMGM’s RTP explanation identifies the loaded game’s information as the current reference and explains why individual sessions can differ substantially.

The Hold and Win label does not establish one return setting across providers or versions. Check the actual configuration and selected mode, especially where an additional option has separate return information. Our RTP guide and high-RTP comparison cover the interpretation.

Volatility concerns the variation in returns. A feature with many visible small coins can still have a prize distribution involving rare large awards. Its animation length and number of counter resets do not establish the likely net result or the time a balance will last.

Read the volatility guide and the separate higher and lower-volatility comparisons. A paying round can return less than its stake, so hit frequency and the number of celebrations also differ from the frequency of profitable results.

A recent run without a feature does not mean one is due. Where a game retains a defined state between rounds, read that state’s actual effect rather than assuming either that every visible meter changes the odds or that all game states behave identically.

Ordinary stakes, chance options and feature-purchase costs

Confirm the complete amount charged for the next paid action. An ordinary round, an enhanced-chance mode and a direct feature purchase can have different prices. The base-stake label may remain visible even when the selected action costs a multiple of it.

A hypothetical feature priced at sixty times a twenty-cent stake costs $12. If an extra-bet mode instead charges one and a half times that twenty-cent stake, its price would be thirty cents per paid round. These are illustrative calculations, not prices assigned to the examples above.

An option described as increasing a feature chance should be read with its cost and exact effect. It does not automatically guarantee a feature, improve every award probability or establish a better return. Check any separate paytable or return information for that mode.

The bonus-buy guide explains direct feature purchases. Availability and price depend on the title and implementation. Entry to a feature is different from a promise that it returns its cost.

Set time and spending limits independently of a partially filled board. A feature ending one symbol short is not a reason to increase the next stake or keep playing to recover losses. The next paid round follows the applicable rules rather than a personal obligation to finish the previous display.

Use demo play and mobile controls to inspect the rules

A clearly labelled virtual-credit demo can help locate the information screen and follow the counter. Inspect which symbols stay, which events reset it and how the total is displayed. Virtual winnings are not withdrawable cash merely because the interface uses a currency symbol.

A short demo cannot establish feature frequency, RTP or later cash results. Confirm the full game name and mode if moving between a provider preview and an operator’s lobby. The free-pokies guide distinguishes virtual play from promotional money.

On a phone, make sure coin units, remaining attempts and the complete stake are readable. A compact number on a coin can be a multiplier rather than currency. Open the rules where labels are shortened or hidden by an animation.

After changing orientation or reloading, check the selected action before using the main button. If a feature animation stalls, inspect completed-round history before repeatedly submitting the same paid action. Keep the title, time and round reference for support.

Our mobile hub and browser-play guide cover access checks. Learning how a counter works does not require using a cash balance as an experiment.

Casino bonus rules still apply

A Hold and Win title appearing in the general lobby does not establish permission to use promotional funds. Check the specific eligible-game list, contribution rate, excluded modes and maximum stake.

A feature purchase or enhanced-chance option needs particular attention because its full cost can exceed the base stake. The game’s ordinary betting range does not override a promotion’s limit. A zero-contribution game and a prohibited game also describe different conditions.

Our bonus-terms guide, wagering comparison and wagering calculator explain the account conditions. A feature total on screen is separate from what is withdrawable after any applicable restrictions.

A practical Hold and Win comparison checklist

  • Entry: exact title, provider, trigger count, symbol positions and mode.
  • Counter: initial attempts, reset conditions and other stopping rules.
  • Values: currency or stake units, collectors, modifiers and settlement timing.
  • Prizes: full-grid conditions, fixed or progressive tiers and the total game cap.
  • Account: total price, promotion eligibility and withdrawal treatment.

Use the software hub and Pragmatic Play guide to identify provider families. Compare the current rules rather than assuming that two similar coin grids have the same feature or mathematical properties.

Hold and Win FAQs

What is a Hold and Win feature?

It is a family of slot features commonly involving retained prize symbols and further respins. The trigger, grid, counter and payout method vary by title. Some games sum held values at the end, while others have collectors or awards during the sequence. Read the individual paytable.

Do all Hold and Win games start with three respins?

No universal initial count should be assumed. Check the actual title and mode for its starting counter, qualifying reset events and stopping rules. A sequel or special version can change these details even when the coins and feature screen look familiar.

Does resetting the counter mean adding more attempts?

A reset normally restores the stated counter value under the relevant rules. In a hypothetical feature resetting to three, a counter showing two returns to three after a qualifying event, rather than becoming five. Other games can use different reset or additional-attempt arrangements.

Are the numbers on money symbols always currency amounts?

No. They can represent currency, credits or multiples of a defined stake. Check the units and any denomination. A 5x label is different from $5, and a collector or multiplier can change how the displayed values contribute to the final award.

Are held coin values always paid only once?

The game's settlement rules determine this. One feature may sum retained symbols at its end, while another awards collections during the sequence. Check whether earlier awards are already in a running total and whether symbols remain available. Adding every visible number can double-count an amount.

Does one empty position mean a full-grid prize is due?

No. A nearly full board does not establish a guaranteed final symbol or improved odds unless the rules explicitly describe a relevant condition. The feature can end without completing the grid. Read any persistent state or threshold rule rather than inferring one from the animation.

Are Hold and Win jackpots always progressive?

No. Mini, Minor, Major and Grand can be fixed stake-multiple awards or other defined prizes. A progressive pool has separate growth and qualification rules. Check each tier and whether a full-grid award adds to, replaces or is capped with the other feature values.

Are Hold and Win respins the same as promotional free spins?

No. An in-game feature follows its own trigger, counter and stake rules. Promotional free spins are allocated through a casino account offer and can carry eligibility, expiry and winnings conditions. A game can also contain a separate free-spin mode alongside its hold feature.

Can a purchased Hold and Win feature return less than its price?

Yes. A hypothetical feature costing sixty times a twenty-cent stake costs $12. If it returns $4, the net result is an $8 loss. Feature entry and paying symbols do not guarantee recovery of the purchase cost. Confirm the complete price and settled return.

Can I use every Hold and Win game with bonus funds?

Only where the specific promotion permits it. Check the eligible-game list, wagering contribution, maximum stake and excluded modes, including feature purchases or chance options. A game appearing in the general lobby does not establish bonus eligibility or override the account offer's conditions.
